Our beloved Prophet and Messenger of Allaah () encouraged anyone who is unable to
attend the Eid prayer with the Imam (congregation), to still offer two rakaats of nafl (Eid prayer)
prayer, so that he/she is not deprived of sharing with the community, in the offering of prayers
on the day of Eid, (Saheeh Al-Bukhari: Book of Prayer of the two Eids, Chapter(25):
“Whoever missed the Eid prayer should offer two rakaats of prayer: (2:74).”
This year is unlike any we have witnessed as we cannot gather for the Eid prayer. We therefore
encourage all of you to offer the Eid prayer at home with your families as described below,
then listen to the speech delivered live on the day of Eid from IIT (streamed on YouTube and
Facebook).
HOW TO PERFORM THE EID PRAYER
The Eid prayer is a two rakaat (units), highly recommended (Sunnah) prayer, just like any two
rakaat prayer, however, with one big difference: this difference is the addition of 12 extra
Takbeeraat in the prayer as follows:
There are 7 extra Takbeeraat in the first rak’ah - NOT including Takbeer Tahreemah to
begin the prayer
There are 5 extra Takbeeraat in the second raka’ah
In both rakaats, the extra Takbeeraat are recited BEFORE the recitation of
Suratul-Faatihah.
STEPS:
First Raka’ah

1. Imam Says “Allaahu Akbar” to begin the prayer.
2. Then everyone, silently recites “Subhaanakal-laahumma wa bi hamdika wa
tabaarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghairuka” (known as Du’a Al-Istiftaah –
The Opening Du’a).
3. Then the Imam recites 7 extra Takbeeraat – one after the other:
Allaahu Akbar (1)
Allaahu Akbar (2)
Allaahu Akbar (3)
Allaahu Akbar (4)
Allaahu Akbar (5)
Allaahu Akbar (6)
Allaahu Akbar (7)
4. Then, after the 7
th
extra Takbeer, everyone folds their hands as normal in prayer, and the
Imam then recites Surah Al-Faatihah and another surah.
5. Then the Imam says “Allahu Akbar” and goes for Ruku’ and Sujood as normal.
Second Raka’ah
1. The Imam says “Allahu Akbar” to stand up from the second Sajdah.
2. Now, while standing for the second rak’ah, he recites 5 extra Takbeeraat – one after the
other
Allaahu Akbar (1)
Allaahu Akbar (2)
Allaahu Akbar (3)
Allaahu Akbar (4)
Allaahu Akbar (5).
3. Then everyone folds their hands as normal in prayer, the Imam then recites Surah
Al-Faatihah and another surah and completes the prayer as normal.
NOTE: While reciting these extra “Takbeeraat”, the Imam and anyone praying with him, raise
the hands, as in raising the hands with Takbeer Tahreemah to begin the prayer.
May Allaah the Exalted accept from us our fasting, prayers, Qiyaam, du’as, Charities, and all
good deeds. And may He gather us together one day soon, by His grace and permission.
